Teachers of Color Internships
St. Mark's School offers a Teacher-Intern Program for recent college graduates of color interested in training toward a career in teaching. In particular, applicants should be interested in working under supervision to gain experience with the varied skills required of secondary boarding school teachers. The program has been developed to increase interest in and exposure to the teaching profession among people of color. To accomplish this end, we offer as wide an exposure as possible to all aspects of secondary boarding school. We are currently accepting applications for the 2009–2010 school year.
The intern's responsibilities will include supervised teaching of at least one class under the guidance of an experienced teacher, along with observation of other classes. The fields open to interns are English, mathematics, history, classics, French, Spanish, biology, physics, chemistry, religion, and the arts. Interns also help coach athletics during at least two but preferably three seasons, assist in dormitory supervision one evening per week and every fifth Saturday evening or as needed, and participate in other areas of school life commensurate with their interests and talents.
Teacher-intern appointments are for one year and carry a base salary of $18,000 plus a dorm resident stipend of $3,500 for a total of $21,500. Living quarters, meals in the school dining hall, Internet access, and full utilities are also provided.
College seniors and recent graduates interested in applying for a St. Mark's School teaching internship should apply before January 1st and write to:
