  • Students Tie World Record!

    The 12th Fold

In December 2001 then high-school student Britney Gallivan broke the world record by folding a piece of paper in half 11 times, and the following year broke the record again by completing 12 folds. On March 29, 2008, fourteen St. Markers attempted to beat Britneys record. The photo shows the results of the event. As you can see we did not beat Britneys record (the 13th fold does not show a contiguous set of 8192 horizontal layers!) We only managed 12 complete folds, but this is a record of some sorts we did it with paper, not gold leaf.

  • Spring Classes for Middle School and High School Students

The St. Mark’s Institute of Mathematics will hold two courses for the Spring of 2008

CLASS 1: RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR HIGH-SCHOOLERS:

This semester’s topic: LABELED TRIANGLES FOR FIXED-POINT RESULTS!

This topic explored will be accessible to all and, after some preliminary legwork, new to the world.

CLASS 2 : ADVANCED MATHEMATICS EXPERIENCE FOR ALL

Directed to a possibly younger audience (middle-school students) but open to all interested, this course will explore a topic in mathematics not covered in the typical high-school curriculum.

This semester’s topic: MODULAR ARITHMETIC AND ITS POWER!

  • PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COURSES FOR TEACHERS

The St. Mark’s Institute of Mathematics, in conjunction with Northeastern University, offers graduate courses for teachers. These courses carry full graduate credit towards as Master’s of Education program (Specialization in Mathematics) or can be taken individually for PDP credit. James Tanton offers the five core mathematics courses:

    Algebra, Numbers and Geometry

    Geometry

    Functions and Trigonometry

    Conceptual Calculus

    Probability and Statistics

These courses, as a set, cover the content of the entire high-school curriculum (as outlined by the Massachusetts DOE) and prepare teachers for state licensure, and, perhaps more importantly, offer a multitude of innovative techniques and approaches to teaching, exploring, and properly understanding mathematics.

The program is designed so that participants may “pick-and-choose” courses for PDP or for full graduate credit towards a Master’s Degree at Northeastern University.

The Probability and Statistics course will be offered Spring 2008 at St. Mark's School on the following dates:

    March 29; April 5, 12; May 3, 10, 17

Full details and registration materials can be found at www.spsc.neu.edu/pdp. Or contact Carol Doherty, Director, Institute of Education, at c.doherty@neu.edu for complete and up-to-date information.

  • ASSOCIATION OF ADVANCED PLACEMENT MATHEMATICS TEACHERS

St. Mark’s has the pleasure of hosting the semi-annual meetings of AAPMT. Details of the spring meeting to be announced.
