For the third year in a row, a Summer Football Clinic was hosted by St. Mark's under the direction of SM head football coach John Campanale. In addition, new Varsity Basketball head coach Greg Synder offered a Summer Basketball Camp here at St. Mark's.
The Football Clinic was held on the new turf field at St. Mark's. This turned out to be an outstanding venue, as incoming St. Mark's III Formers, rising freshmen at St. John's Prep and Tabor Academy, and American Youth Football players from the Northoboro/Southboro, Shrewsbury, and Nashoba programs all took part in a thorough and exacting week of football training, drills, and preparation for high school competition.
"At the SM Football Clinic we don't play games or 7-on-7 contests," explained Coach Campanale. "We teach and work at fundamentals, skills, and enhancing the particpants' abilities as football players on offense, defense, and special teams." Campanale's Clinic staff included SM assistant coaches Rohan Arjun and Scott Ladner, along with Scott Wambolt, the head freshman coach at nearby Algonquin Regional High School. "I was also privileged to have five of my St. Mark's players volunteer to help and coach at the Clinic," said Campanale. "The participation of VI Form captains Michael Hoffman and Zach Twitchell, and IV Formers Luke Chiasson, Drew Ladner, and Logan Lee was a highlight of the clinic, with their diligence, their ability to teach young players, and their uber-positive attitudes. They were such an awesome representation of St. Mark's and St. Mark's football."
John Campanale is beginning his sixth season as St. Mark's head coach. This past year he was selected by the other 15 Independent School League head coaches to represent the ISL at the annual Shriners All-Star football game. Only 12 coaches across all of Massachusetts were so honored.
Greg Snyder, assistant coach on this past winter's St. Mark's New England champion Boys' Varsity Basketball team and now the program's new head coach, is working with 30 participants at the first SM Summer Basketball Camp, from August 13-17. Snider has previously run basketball camps at Jamesville-DeWitt High School, SUNY Potsdam, Hamilton College, and Colgate University.
Assisting Coach Snyder and his coaching staff are three St. Mark's players: IV Formers Aaron Falzon and Aaron McLean, both veterans of the 2012 N.E. championship SM varsity, and Marcos Echevarria '15, who will also be on this year's team.
"I am excited to hold the first St. Mark's Basketball Camp this summer,” commented Coach Snyder, “and hopefully it continues to grow in size each of the following years. We plan on running either a weekend camp or league for local youth players during the fall as well as have a ‘campers game night’ during one of our home games this year where the campers will sit together in the stands, play a quick game at halftime, and then eat pizza with the team after the game. It is my goal to build a strong relationship between the St. Mark's basketball program and the surrounding community through these types of events."
