Posted: October 22, 2012

This past weekend, October 19-20, was the annual St. Mark’s Family Weekend. Hundreds of guests— parents and families of St. Markers—visited the campus and experienced a wide range of academic, artistic, and athletic opportunities.

On Friday, parents were able to schedule conferences with their children’s advisors, as well as attend receptions in the Putnam Family Arts Center hosted by academic departments. Both Taft and the Class of ’45 Hall featured “The Arts Unleashed”. Exhibitions of the visual arts in Taft Hall were enjoyed by the guests, as was a culminating musical program at 8:30 PM. The Jazz Band, the Winds and Strings orchestras, the Cat’s Meow, the Octet, the St. Mark’s Choir, and scenes from plays were all featured. Outside was a torrential downpour, while inside there was dazzling art and delightful music.

On Saturday morning, there was an all-parents meeting hosted by Head of School John C. Warren ’74, followed by academic mini-classes. There were also specific presentations/workshops for parents of students in each Form. “Being a St. Mark’s Parent” was the session for III Form parents, held in the Faculty Room. IV Form parents met with Dr. Laura Appell-Warren in the Black Box Theater for a presentation and discussion of off-campus program opportunities. Both V and VI Form parents could attend special College Counseling sessions in the Class of 1945 Hall. There was also the opportunity for more conferences with individual Advisors.

After lunch, dessert was served in Taft Hall, where Dean of Academics Lynette Sumpter and Executive Director of Development Kirk Swenson presented curricular and financial updates on behalf of the School.

There were ten home athletic contests on what was had become a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Parents and families of St. Mark’s athletes were on hand for several hours of SM sports excitement.

The entire weekend went off smoothly and successfully. With an extra day off on Monday to give St. Markers the opportunity to be with their families, students will return in time for Form Day on Tuesday and the renewal of classes on Wednesday.
