Belmont Chapel

The beautiful and historical Belmont Chapel is sacred space where the entire St. Mark’s community gathers twice weekly.

Beautiful and intimate, Belmont Chapel provides sacred space intending to ground and inform the heart, soul, and spirit of the school community. It is where the entire St. Mark’s community gathers in a required and liturgically centered meeting twice weekly, with other voluntary rituals and services offered during the week. As a memorial to St. Markers who served their country in the first World War, Belmont Chapel reminds the community that theirs is a heritage rich in tradition and mindful of sacrifice.

The art and architecture of the chapel — whether painting, stained glass, or sculpture — draws service participants and visitors into dialogue with heroes and heroines of faith, the biblical narrative, and the academy, while also drawing them toward that point where the temporal aspires to meet the eternal.

The community is seated in a collegiate or choir style, facing one another, to emphasize the corporate nature of the service and the desired active participation of all in reflection, singing, and prayer. The administration and decorum of the sanctuary is guided by faculty and several student chapel wardens, the latter of whom are selected annually from the fourth through sixth forms.

The “crypt” has been so named for as long as anyone can remember and signifies that space underneath the chapel that has been employed as a choir rehearsal room, as well as for multi–faith use and observance. It is well suited for meditation and smaller meetings.
