Sustainability

In valuing cooperation over self-interest and recognizing our role as global citizens, St. Mark’s School actively fosters environmental stewardship and sustainable development in its education, planning and practices.

Area of Focus Objectives

Energy

Reduce energy consumption by encouraging conservation, improving building efficiency and transitioning to renewable resources when possible.

Waste

Minimize solid waste disposed in landfills by aggressively recycling, composting, reusing and reducing materials used on campus.

Curriculum

Develop topics and opportunities within the St. Mark’s curriculum for teachers and students to engage in learning experiences that promote global issues and sustainability.

Transportation

Conserve fuel and reduce the environmental health and pollution impacts of hydrocarbon emissions by limiting unnecessary bus or automobile trips, idling and replacing older vehicles with more fuel efficient models.

Food

Improve nutrition, reduce carbon emissions, support the local economy and reduce pesticide exposure by purchasing food from local sources and growing organic food on campus.

Purchasing

Develop and implement a purchasing policy to protect environmental health, minimizes waste, conserve resources and improve efficiency.

Water

Protect and conserve water by reducing pollution, cutting consumption and developing ways to use it more efficiently.

Land Use

Maintain St. Mark’s land assets sustainably by limiting pollution, protecting biodiversity, managing woodlands and preserving local ecosystems and open space.

Building

All new construction will be built to an appropriate sustainability standard and maintained using the highest possible standards of sustainable maintenance products and practices.
