Broadway Nights Show Benefits SM Haiti Partnership

On consecutive evenings, Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, more than a dozen St. Markers performed songs from a number of Broadway productions as part of the annual Broadway Nights event. Funds raised at these shows went to benefit the St. Mark's Haiti partnership.

Charlotte Russell of the St. Mark's music faculty hosted the event, while James Wallace, Director of Music and chair of the arts department at the School, was the piano accompanist.

The performances featured Grace Darko '18 singing "What About Love" from The Color Purple to open the show and "I'm Here" from The Color Purple toi close out the night.

Other performers were Tommy Flathers '21 singing "Edelweiss" from The Sound of Music; Libby Flathers '21 and Dani Ortiz '21 singing "Love is an Open Door" from Frozen; Niki Noel '20 with "A Change in Me" from Beauty and the Beast; Conrad Krapf '20 and Will Lu '20 performing the title song from Phantom of the Opera; Jonathan Larson and Rachel Hwang '18 singing "Seasons of Love" from Rent; Julian Yang '20 playing "Somewhere" from West Side Story on the saxophone; Caroline McGinnis '18 and Drew D'Orsi '18 taking the lead on "Summer Nights" from Grease (with Jack Thalmann '18 and Jamie Lance '18; Izzy Kim '18 with "Honey, Honey" from Mamma Mia!; Jonathan Shakespeare '18 singing "Dancing through Life from Wicked; Maeve Ahern '20 performing "Defying Gravity," also from Wicked; and Anthony D'Angelo '18 with "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" from Les Misérables.

There was also a sing-a-long: "One Hand, One Heart" from West Side Story.

The Haiti Partnership Committee presented and led "Grand Dieu, nous te benisons," a traditional Haitian Folk Song. St. Mark's, through the auspices of the School Partnership in Haiti Program, is partnered with St. Marguerite's School in Latournelle, Haiti. The Haiti Partnership Committee at St. Mark's School is an active and vibrant organization and is dedicated to developing a partnership between St. Mark's School and St. Marguerite's School in Latournelle, Haiti. The Partnership's goal is to foster communication, education and cultural exploration between the two schools. St. Mark's is also committed to supporting capital projects at Ste. Marguerite's through fundraising, in both the local and broader school communities. In this vein, Broadway Nights is sponsored by the Haiti partnership Committee and all proceeds help to support teacher salaries, school programming, and community initiatives in Latournelle.
