Wednesday, February 4, was Play for Haiti Day at St. Mark's. It was a day to raise funds to benefit St. Mark's longtime partner school: Ste. Marguerite's in Haiti, under the auspices of the Haiti Partnership Committee at St. Mark's.
The Haiti Partnership Committee at St. Mark's School is an active and vibrant organization and is dedicated to developing a partnership between St. Mark's School and St. Marguerite's School in Latournelle, Haiti. The partnership's goal is to foster communication, education, and cultural exploration between the two schools. St. Mark's is also committed to supporting capital projects at Ste. Marguerite's through fundraising, in both the local and broader school communities.
In the days leading up to Play for Haiti Day, t-shirts were sold to students and faculty. On the day itself, St. Markers were urged to wear their shirts and to support St. Mark's athletic teams. There was also a bake sale in the Michel Faculty Athletic Center during the games. Through the generous involvement of the St. Mark's community, almost $2,500 was raised to support teacher salaries at Ste. Marguerite's.
"Our partnership with St. Marguerite's provides an opportunity for our students to be a part of something much bigger than themselves," said Elise Morgan, senior associate director of Admission at St. Mark's and longtime faculty facilitator for the Haiti Partnership. "They learn the importance of perspective taking, empathy and most importantly the partnership helps our students understand how to be better global citizens."
