As a member of the varsity wrestling team, Anaya Strong ’24 won the national championship in her weight class in 2022. The following year, the boarding student from the Bronx, N.Y., studied abroad in France. While at St. Mark’s, Anaya also co-led the Black Lives Union and the Dancing Lions club; made contributions on the JV girls’ soccer team and varsity girls’ crew team; and spearheaded important community and equity work as a Pathways Prefect. A leader among the Lions, Anaya is headed to Georgia State University this fall.
Why St. Mark’s?
I chose to attend St. Mark’s because of the opportunities offered to all students, specifically students of color, such as conferences, dances at other schools, and events within the School. In addition, I was inspired by the drive and independence of St. Mark’s students, as I saw in my sister, cousin, and dad who all attended St. Mark’s.
What does a Pathways Prefect do?
As a Pathways Prefect, my role is to be the voice of the student body when it comes to issues surrounding community and equity within the School. I am able to push for changes, such as free laundry and free women’s sanitary products in the bathroom, and help students plan community events for affinity groups to share their culture and identity.
What have you learned about yourself through your C&E work?
I have learned that I am very passionate and determined in C&E work. I found myself pushing consistently for events or changes until I had clear, concrete answers. In addition to that, doing this work has solidified for me how much I want to continue doing this work in my future.
Favorite class and why?
My favorite St. Mark’s class was Survey of Literary Genres, a IV Form English class. This was my favorite class because not only did I enjoy reading all the different genres and having discussions surrounding them, I also grew a lot as a writer and was able to find my voice.
What will you miss most about St. Mark’s?
I will miss all the teachers who pushed and supported me. Shout out to Ms. Martin, Mr. Chen, Mr. DaSilva, Mr. Boston, Mr. Patterson, and Mr. Alford. They have been my anchors throughout my St. Mark’s career.
