Annual Awards Ceremony Celebrates Excellence in All Areas of School Life

St. Mark’s School officially kicked off Prize Day Weekend on Sunday, May 24, with the 2026 Awards Ceremony, a celebration recognizing students for excellence in academics, athletics, leadership, citizenship, and character. The ceremony honored students whose achievements and contributions have distinguished them across all areas of school life. Faculty members and school leaders presented department awards, athletic honors, and special prizes before welcoming the newest inductees into the Cum Laude Society.
Department Awards
The Brantwood Prize: Awarded to the students who have done the most for Brantwood Camp.
Recipients: Emma Fitzpatrick ’26 and Manasa Mahesh ’27
The Carleton Burr Rand Prize: Awarded for excellence in journalism.
Recipient: Xinyu (Catherine) Zhang ’26
The Coleman Prize in English: Awarded to the student who submitted the most outstanding original essay written during the academic year.
Recipient: Craig Haas III ’27
The William Otis Smith Prize for English Verse: Awarded for the most outstanding original verse or poetry written during the academic year.
Recipient: Abigail Lopes ’28
The Redmond Prize for English Narrative: Awarded for the most outstanding original narrative written during the academic year.

The Frederick R. Avis and Anna M. Pliscz Science Prize: Awarded to students who, through curiosity, determination, passion, and practical application of ideas, have acquired a deeper understanding of scientific processes.

The Philip Gallatin Cammann Class of 1914 STEM Prize: Awarded to the student who has most successfully pursued breadth and depth of study in STEM disciplines.

The John Suydam Mathematics Prize: Awarded to the VI Former who has done the best work in mathematics while also studying physics.

The John A. Carey Prize: Awarded to the student who contributed most to the visual arts at St. Mark’s and excelled in more than one art form.

The Frederick A. Cammann ’47 Music Prize: Awarded to the student who demonstrates the most talent in musical theory and composition.

The J. Stanley Sheppard Music Prize: Awarded to the student who contributed most to the musical life of the School during the current year.

The Walter Irving Badger Prize in Dramatics: Awarded to the VI Former who has contributed the most to drama at the School during their St. Mark’s career.
Recipient: Emily Ling ’26
The Roy Irving Murray Prize for Excellence in Sacred Studies: Awarded in memory of a St. Mark’s chaplain who served in the 1920s and 1930s.

The H. Casimir de Rham Prize for Excellence in French: Awarded for excellence in French.

The Peter Bryce Appleton Prize for Excellence in Spanish: Awarded for excellence in Spanish.

The Chinese Language Prize: Awarded to the student who has demonstrated extraordinary aptitude and passion for the study of Chinese during their career at St. Mark’s.

Cum Laude Society Induction
Founded in 1906, the Cum Laude Society is dedicated to honoring scholastic achievement in secondary schools and recognizes academic excellence and honorable achievement among students at St. Mark’s.
