Year End Concert Honors VI Form Musicians

On Tuesday, May 22, the St. Mark's Music Department held its traditional Year End Concert in the Putnam Family Arts Center's Class of 1945. It featured performances from the School's Choir, Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble, involving as many as eighty different students. Sixteen graduating VI Formers were also recognized for their contributions to the St. Mark's music program during their time at the School.

The SM Orchestra, under the direction of Nathaniel Meyer, performed Johannes Brahms' Academic Festival Overture. Then, in a change of pace, they delivered a medley entitled The Best of Green Day, an arrangement by Douglas E. Wagner.

The Choir, led by SM Director of Music James Wallace and supported by vocal assistant Charlotte Russell and harpsichord accompanist Ilya Kazantsev, performed 18th century composer Grzegorz Gerwazy Gorczycki's Laetatus Sum and contemporary composer Christopher Tin's Baba Yetu.

The SM Jazz Ensemble concluded the concert. Led by veteran director Stephen Fell and assistant director Tucker Antell, they performed Tio Puente's Ran Kan Kan and Sonny Rollins' St. Thomas.

Justin Biela (tenor saxophonist for the Jazz Ensemble), Stephen Burke (tenor singer, co-president of the Choir, co-president of the Marksmen, a veteran of SM Choir tours to Barbados and Cuba, and a featured soloist at the End of Year concert), Ethan Chung (Orchestra violinist and featured performer at the End of Year concert), Anthony D'Angelo (bass singer in the Choir and the Marksmen), Grace Darko (alto singer in the Choir and the Royal Blues; featured soloist at the End of Year concert), Kaela Dunne (alto singer, co-president of the Choir, co-president of the Royal Blues, and veteran of the Choir's Cuba tour), Sophie Haugen (jazz pianist and president of the Jazz Ensemble), Benjamin Hunnewell (bass singer in the Choir and the Marksmen), Rachel Hwang (cellist. Orchestra president, and featured performer at the End of Year concert), Jason Hwang (bass singer in the Choir and veteran of the Cuba tour), Izzy Kim (soprano singer in the Choir and a featured soloist at the End of Year concert), Mo Liu (soprano singer in both the Choir and the Royal Blues; co-president of the Royal Blues; and a featured soloist at the End of Year concert), Caroline McGinnis (alto singer in the Choir), Jonathan Shakespeare (bass singer in the Choir, co-president of the Marksmen, veteran of both the Barbados and Cuba tours, and a featured soloist at the End of Year concert), Riya Shankar (violinist and co-president of the Orchestra; featured soloist at the End of Year concert), and Kaito Tanaka (tuba player and co-president of the Orchestra.
