The St. Mark's community is saddened to learn that longtime St. Mark's faculty spouse and former SM staffer Sylvia Wiedergott passed away on Thursday, November 1. She was 84.
Sylvia Bloch married William A. "Fritz" Wiedergott in 1956, and she arrived on campus in the fall of 1958 with her husband. They lived on campus for 39 years, raising their family at St. Mark's while Fritz carved out a legendary career as coach, athletic director, and teacher.
Mrs. Wiedergott worked for many years in the St. Mark's business office. Most importantly, she was a much-beloved surrogate mother to so many of her husband's students, especially his teams and advisees.
"Sylvia was a vibrant presence at St. Mark's when she and Fritz lived on campus," said Head of School John C. Warren '74, "opening her home, with Fritz, to many generations of St. Markers. Sylvia and Fritz were frequent visitors to campus during the years of their retirement."
"She was so helpful with and supportive of so many of us," says alumnus Richard E. "Nick" Noble '76, who managed wrestling teams coached by Fritz. "She welcomed us into her home, listened to our troubles, and kept in touch after graduation."
She was pre-deceased by her daughter, Heidi, and her husband, Fritz. She is survived by sons Karl (SM Class of 1980) and Bill (longtime SM staffer); daughters Anita, Theresa, Heather, and their families; several grandchildren; and generations of St. Markers who knew and loved her.
A memorial service will take place at St. Mark's in Belmont Chapel on Sunday, November 11, at 1:00 PM. A reception will follow in the Hinkle Room.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Sylvia Wiedergott to the Jimmy Fund.
