Head of School John C. Warren '74 has announced the schedule for Prize Day Week 2020. A series of traditional end-of-year events will be held remotely, from June 1 through June 6.
On Monday, June 1, there will be a virtual academic showcase, highlighting student achievement. On the morning of Wednesday, June 3, the annual induction of new members into the St. Mark's Chapter of the national Cum Laude Society will be conducted online. The Cum Laude has honored scholastic achievement at secondary institutions for more than a century. The traditional last VI Form Chapel service will follow that event.
The first of two scheduled Prize Day ceremonies will take place on the evening of Thursday, June 4. At 8:00 a virtual "Presentation of Prizes" will take place. At that time, all of the prizes that are traditionally presented during the Prize Day ceremony—including departmental prizes, athletics prizes, character prizes, and faculty and staff prizes—will be awarded.
The traditional Baccalaureate service will happen at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5. And the next morning, starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 6, a second Prize Day ceremony will be held remotely. It will celebrate the Class of 2020 with the reading of the names of graduates and speeches by the Rt. Rev. J. Clark Grew '58, GP '11, '21, '23, and valedictorian Jack Griffin '20.
"We hope that all students will be able to join us for these important community events," said Mr. Warren in his announcement. "After discussions with our Monitors and other student leaders, we have decided that some events, including the Southborough Tea and the Gentlemen's Social, would not work well in a virtual setting and have thus been postponed until such time when students will be able to gather in person. I know that many of you are eager to learn more about plans for an in-person Prize Day ceremony for the Class of 2020. We are committed to holding such a ceremony and to ensuring that it is special for all involved. Because of the challenges of holding an in-person event of this scale on our campus, many of the details about this ceremony are still being worked out. We imagine that the best time for this event may well be the spring of 2021. With appreciation for your patience, please know we will share the plans for this in-person ceremony as soon as we have formulated them."
All of the upcoming Prize Day Week events, including the Cum Laude Society induction ceremony and the Baccalaureate service, will be held via Zoom. Further details will be provided closer to the time.
Following is a preliminary schedule of events for the week of June 1-6. We look forward to sharing additional details with you soon. Please note that times for these events have been set to accommodate, as best we can, our graduates around the world. All times indicated are Eastern Daylight Time.
