Barely two weeks into the school year, St. Mark's teams are already off to a strong start as the 2019 fall athletic season gets underway. Girls' varsity soccer is already 2-0, while all four cross country teams—boys' varsity, girls' varsity, boys' JV, and girls' JV—are all unbeaten at 1-0.
The girls' varsity soccer team defeated Pomfret 2-1 and Southfield 3-1 to start the season. Although the program lost a trio of talented 2018 all-ISL selections—Ainsley DuBose, Kerrie Verbeek, Zoe Maddox—and a New England all-star—Caroline Dawson—to graduation, along with Coaches Award recipient Shelby Howard, head coach Lauren Ames has several strong young players stepping up, including last year's most improved player, Samantha Leslie '20.
Both the boys' and girls' varsity cross country teams defeated St. George's in season-opening action. Josh Bergers '22, an all-ISL selection last season, finished first in that race, followed by team captain and ISL honorable mention Blake Gattuso '20 in second. For the girls' varsity, III Former Judy Xie led the way, followed by last year's MVP Natalie Zaterka '22 (pictured above)—who earned both all-ISL and all-New England honors in 2018.
Boys' varsity soccer tied Cushing 0-0 in its opening game this autumn. Under new head coach Eric Anderson—Babson College's all-time leading scorer as a player and a former assistant coach for the powerful Rivers School soccer program—the 2019 St. Mark's team features returning MVP Brendan Gibbons '21 and a strong defense.
Varsity field hockey lost a tough one to Williston, by a score of 2-3. Coming off last fall's 10-win campaign, head coach Colleen Finnerty '11 is looking to returning veterans Lauren Tolve '22 (all-ISL), Phoebe MacLeod '20 (ISL HM), Lydia Rascher '20 (all-NEPSCAC HM), and Erin Murray '21 (most improved in 2018) to bolster success.
Varsity football opens its season on Saturday, September 21, on the road at Thayer Academy.. New head coach Anthony Figueiredo hopes to better last year's 1-7 record, supported by a host of returning veterans, including all-ISL honorees Jordan Uzochukwu '20 and Jacob Silvester '22, along with 2018 Smith Football Prize recipient Joe Felix '20.
Special praise goes to the boys' JV cross country team. By defeating St. George's in their debut race this autumn, the JV harriers have run their St. Mark's record winning streak to 54 victories in a row.
