Coaching Staff

  • Head Coach

Liz Cavanaugh '04 enters her eighth season as Head Coach, 12th season overall, in 2019-2020. She oversees the girls' rowing program and the team's facility at the Donohue Rowing Center on Lake Quinsigamond. Throughout her career, Cavanaugh has coached the varsity team to six NEIRA medals, including four gold, two silver, and two bronze. She led the 2015 team to the program's best ever racing record, 15-1-1, and its highest overall NEIRA team finish, second place. Her crews have qualified for both the USRowing Youth National Championships and the National Schools' Championship Regatta. She has also coached three crews in the Head of the Charles Regatta in 2015, 2016, and 2017.

Prior to her coaching career at St. Mark’s, Cavanaugh rowed four years of Division I crew at The George Washington University, stroking back-to-back Atlantic 10 Conference Championship crews in 2005 and 2006, as well as a Grand Final finish at the 2005 Eastern Sprints, George Washington's best ever finish within the Eastern Association of Women's Rowing Colleges. She was named MVP of the program in 2006 as the stroke of GW's Varsity 8+. She began her rowing career as a new sophomore at St. Mark's in 2002 under Head Coach Andy Harris.

Cavanaugh serves as Associate Director of Admission, House Head, and Advisor at St. Mark's, and lives on West Campus in Elm House with her golden retriever, George Washington Cavanaugh, a permanent passenger in her coaching launch.

St. Mark's Girls' Crew, the school's first ever spring girls' varsity sport, enjoys a rich history dating back to 1978, when the program was founded by former Head Coach and Director of Rowing, Andy Harris. Harris led the St. Mark's girls to the 1988 NEIRA Varsity 4+ Championship, and later on to the 1989 USRowing Youth National Championship. He and Cavanaugh co-coached the 2012 NEIRA silver medalist Varsity 4+ before Harris retired from coaching in 2012. Former standout Wesleyan University rower Liz McColloch now serves as varsity assistant coach alongside Cavanaugh and has been instrumental in helping guide the program to many recent NEIRA medals.

Many of the program's recent graduates have gone on to top NCAA rowing programs, including Harvard University, Princeton University, Brown University, Columbia University, US Naval Academy, Syracuse University, The George Washington University, Hamilton College, Trinity College, Bates College, and the University of Vermont.
