On Saturday, October 2, Girls Cross Country hosted BBN, Groton, and Rivers for a quad meet. Wendy Wu (‘24) led her teammates in the JV race finishing third overall in a season’s best time for her. The other scoring runners for the JV were Diana Oh (‘24), Izzy Mundel (‘25), Coco Chen(‘24) and Anna Xing (‘24). Though all the girls ran improved times they were not able to beat very strong teams from BBN and Groton. Sixth-form captain Natalie Zaterka won the varsity race, running a very strategic race against Groton’s top runner. Helena Xie ‘22 finished second for St. Mark’s and 6th overall while running a career personal best time. Ivy Li ‘23, Veronika Kitsul ‘22 and Sua Yoo ‘24 were the other scoring runners with Jackie Zatsiorsky ‘22 and Jackie Huang ‘24 filling out the varsity team and acting as displacers against Rivers. The team was able to best Rivers, but lost to both Groton and BBN. |

Tabor | Away | Loss | 50-15 |
The girls cross country teams traveled to Washburn Park in Marion, MA which is Tabor’s home course. The race was a quad meet against Tabor, Middlesex and Milton. The girls teams were combined into one big race which gave the girls a preview of what it will be like when they race there again for the ISL Championships in November. 6th form captains Natalie Zaterka and Helena Xie both ran career-best times. In addition, 6th former Veronika Kitsul and 4th former Maddie Bazinet also ran their personal best times. Many other girls ran season-best times. Despite the great work, we were not able to beat the very strong Middlesex and Milton teams and lost by one point to Tabor in the varsity races. The JV team also lost to Middlesex and Milton. (Tabor did not have enough runners for a JV team.) The girls are excited by their times and look forward to racing at home again on October 16 for Family Weekend. |

On a lovely fall day the girls cross country team faced Thayer Academy and Lawrence Academy for our Family Weekend race. Thayer is the top team in the league this year and despite some strong running the St. Mark’s team was overmatched. The Lions did beat Lawrence Academy in an unofficial race as we had already raced them earlier in the season. Captain and sixth former Helena Xie continued her strong season by leading her teammates and finishing fourth overall. Ivy Li, ‘23 finished second for us with Veronika Kitsul, ‘22 not far behind. Sua Yoo ‘24 continuing her steady improvement and running a personal best time was our fourth finisher. Princess Alexander ‘22 was our final scoring runner for the varsity. There was not a separate JV race, but several girls put in strong performances including Sunny Li ‘22, who ran her best time of the season so far, and Jackie Huang and Diana Oh who ran their best times on the St. Mark’s course this year. |

On Friday, November 5, the girls cross country team traveled to the Wrentham Developmental Center for the ISL Championship races. This course was new to everyone in the league, but is one that is used for many public school meets. The course was a fast course so many runners had personal bests in both the JV and Varsity races. Natalie Zaterka once again led her teammates finishing 14 in the Varsity race and earning a medal for her efforts. Helena Xie, 6th form captain, also had a fantastic personal best time and finished 20th. The rest of the varsity team included Sua Yoo ‘24, who passed many runners to finish third for St. Mark’s, Andria Bao, Ivy Li, Veronika Kitsul and Princess Alexander. In the JV race, 6th former Jackie Zatsiorsky led the St. Mark’s group followed closely by Wendy Wu ‘24. The other scoring runners in the JV were Jackie Huang, Diana Oh, Judy Xie, Izzy Mundel and Coco Chen. Both the JV and Varsity teams ended up with 9th place finishes. |

Head Coach
Coach Karen Bryant has been coaching girls cross country since the fall of 1996 and has been the head coach since 2002. Her goals for each year are to have each girl improve individually and as a member of the team, and for each girl to recognize that running is a lifelong sport. The workouts are tailored to where each runner is within her training and experience. Cross country is a sport that allows each runner to see how the effort they put in pays off in results in races. A runner has the chance to watch her own skills develop while always playing a role in the team's success. Several students have on to run in college and truly embraced running as a lifelong sport by competing in races and marathons after leaving St. Mark's.
