I offer heartfelt thanks on behalf of the entire St. Mark’s community to our generous donors who contributed $9,184,969 during the 2020-2021 fiscal year, including $3,080,021 for the Annual Fund.
For the second consecutive fiscal year, life at St. Mark’s was dramatically impacted by COVID-19. We are so thankful that our alumni, parents, friends, and supporters gave generously to the School, enabling St. Mark’s to continue to offer a rich academic and residential program while operating safely.
2020-2021 Annual Report
The Campaign for St. Mark’s School - 2021 Update
2020-2021 Annual Fund Hits Record High
The pandemic might have challenged St. Mark’s to find new and innovative ways to educate students, but it did not stop the remarkable momentum of giving by alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends. Thanks to the generosity of so many, the Annual Fund received a record-setting $3,080,021, with St. Mark's parents contributing $1,039,990 of that total. In the spring of 2021, more than twenty-five members joined the Thayer Society through the Thayer Society Challenge as both existing and new members made this a successful effort by raising $532,543. Giving Day and Philanthropy Days were also successful as the St. Mark’s community contributed $195,910 and respectively $352,263. This remarkable success could not have been achieved without the enduring leadership and efforts of many alumni and parent volunteers, including Annual Fund Chair Bruce Morgan ’70, Parent Annual Fund Chair Michael Pellini P’20, ’23, and Parents’ Association Co-Chairs Michelle and Thomas Davis P’21.
Residential Life Initiative Moves Forward and Upward
In February 2021, the St. Mark's Board of Trustees approved the start of construction for the new residence hall, helping the School move one step closer to realizing a major goal of the Residential Life Initiative and a priority of the Lives of Consequence campaign.
Favorable weather conditions in the spring of 2021 allowed big diggers to carve the building’s foundation out of the hill adjacent to Thieriot House before a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony officially kicked off the project in June.
In September 2021, St. Mark's celebrated another major milestone with a topping-off ceremony as the building's final steel beam was put in place, marking the completion of structural construction. Students, faculty, staff, and friends of the School gathered beforehand to sign the beam.
Financial Aid Fund Fosters Diverse Community
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, financial aid remained steady in the 2020-2021 school year compared to the previous year. About 108 students received financial aid, which accounted for about 30 percent of students attending St. Mark’s.
Similar to previous years, financial aid grants averaged about $54,701 per boarding student and $25,885 per day student, allowing St. Mark’s to provide the highest average of grants among its peer schools.
Grand Opening of East Gallery
Another milestone of the ambitious Residential Life Initiative was completed in June 2021 thanks to generous support from the St. Mark’s community. Head of School John C. Warren ’74, Board of Trustees President Alys Reynders Scott ’85, P ’21, ’23, and Senior Teacher Barbara Putnam participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the Alice Yin Hung ’86 East Gallery.
Faculty Excellence Fund Update
The responsibilities of St Mark’s faculty members go beyond their academic duties. They also coach, advise, and serve as House Parents. In an effort to attract and retain top caliber faculty to nurture students in every aspect of their lives, we must continue to provide opportunities to our faculty for personal and professional growth.
